Why Ceramic Coating Preparation Matters More Than The Coating

Why Preparation Decides Everything
A ceramic coating is transparent and it is hard. It does not hide anything and it does not fix anything. Whatever state the paint is in when the coating cures is the state you have locked in.
It also needs a genuinely clean surface to bond to. Oils, old wax, sealant residue and bonded contamination all sit between the coating and the clear coat, which is where patchy early failure comes from.
Stage One, The Wash
Not a quick rinse. A pre-rinse to remove loose grit, snow foam to lift what is left, then a safe two bucket contact wash with clean media. The point is to remove as much as possible before anything touches the paint, because grit dragged across a panel is exactly how swirls get created.
Stage Two, Chemical Decontamination
Iron Removal
Brake dust and rail dust embed themselves in paint as tiny iron particles. A dedicated iron remover dissolves them chemically. On a neglected car the runoff turns deep purple, which is the contamination leaving the paint.
Tar Removal
Road tar bonds hard, particularly along lower doors, sills and behind wheels. A tar solvent breaks it down without abrading the surface.
Stage Three, Mechanical Decontamination
A clay treatment shears off whatever chemical decontamination could not dissolve. This is the stage that makes paint feel genuinely smooth rather than gritty, and most cars have never had it done.
Stage Four, Paint Correction Or Polishing
This is where the finish is actually made. On a new or well kept car, a gloss enhancing machine polish is enough to lift clarity. On a car with real swirling, a correction stage removes the defects rather than filling them.
Every Popz coating package includes a gloss enhancing machine polish. Where the paint needs more than that, correction is quoted separately after inspection, because bundling it into a fixed price means either overcharging clean cars or rushing rough ones.
Paint Depth Is Measured First
Clear coat is finite and every polishing pass removes a little. Shabz measures paint depth panel by panel before any cutting, then uses the least aggressive combination that actually removes the defect.
Stage Five, The Panel Wipe
Polishing leaves behind oils and polishing residue that make paint look better than it is. A panel wipe strips all of it, revealing the true corrected finish and giving the coating clean, bare clear coat to bond to.
This stage is invisible in photos and it is the one most commonly skipped. A coating applied over polishing oils will not bond properly, and it tends to fail in patches within months.
Stage Six, Application And Curing
The coating goes on panel by panel, is levelled by hand within the product's flash window, then inspected under correction lighting before it sets. Miss the window and you get high spots that need polishing back off and recoating.
Temperature, humidity and dust all matter here, which is why Popz works from a fully enclosed, climate controlled mobile set-up rather than an open driveway. The car then cures under cover before hand back.
How To Spot A Quote That Has Skipped It
- The price is dramatically lower than everything else you have been quoted
- Preparation is not itemised anywhere in the quote
- The job is quoted as a few hours rather than a full day
- Machine polishing is listed as an optional extra rather than included
- There is no mention of where the car will be during application
- Nobody asks to see the paint or asks about its condition first
What Proper Preparation Buys You
A coating that bonds evenly and performs for its intended life. Paint that looks corrected rather than merely shiny. And a warranty that actually stands up, because accredited coatings depend on documented process.
Every Popz ceramic package runs the full preparation sequence, from Ceramic Standard upward. Shabz does all of it himself, one car per day, in the morning and finished by night.
