How To Wash And Maintain A Ceramic Coated Car

The First Wash After Application
Wait until the coating has cured as instructed. Popz gives you a written aftercare guide covering exactly this, because the window differs by product and rushing it is one of the few ways to genuinely damage a fresh coating.
During that window, keep the car dry and away from sprinklers, rain if practical, and anything that leaves mineral deposits behind.
The Correct Wash Routine
Step One, Pre-Rinse
Rinse thoroughly from the top down before touching the car. On a coated surface, a genuinely large share of the dirt leaves at this stage, which is the whole point of the coating.
Step Two, Snow Foam Or Pre-Wash
Let a pH neutral foam dwell for a few minutes, then rinse. This lifts the remaining film so that the contact stage has as little to do as possible.
Step Three, Two Bucket Contact Wash
One bucket of pH neutral shampoo, one of clean rinse water, both with grit guards. Wash top to bottom in straight lines, rinsing the mitt between panels. Lower panels last, because that is where the worst grit is.
Step Four, Rinse And Dry
Rinse completely, then dry promptly with a clean, plush drying towel or filtered blower. Letting a coated car air dry is the fastest way to get water spots, because minerals are left behind as the water evaporates.
What To Avoid
- Automatic brush car washes, which are the single fastest way to swirl coated paint
- Dish soap and other strong degreasers, which strip protection over time
- Wash mitts dropped on the ground and used again
- Washing in direct sun on hot panels
- Letting the car air dry after rinsing
- Aggressive polishes or compounds, which physically remove coating
- Random ceramic sprays that are not compatible with your coating
Dealing With Contamination Promptly
A coating buys you time, not immunity. Bird droppings, sap and bug residue are acidic and will eventually etch even a coated surface if they sit and bake in the sun.
Keep a quick detailer and a clean microfibre in the boot and deal with them when you notice them. Two minutes then saves a correction later.
Periodic Maintenance
Even with perfect washing, coated cars benefit from periodic decontamination and a coating top up. Traffic film builds gradually and can mask coating performance long before the coating has actually degraded.
The Popz maintenance membership exists for exactly this. Coating safe washing, wheels, arches and jambs, interior vacuum and wipe down, a coating top up each visit and a documented inspection for your warranty record.
How To Tell Whether It Is Still Working
Judge it on a properly clean car, not a dirty one. If dirt releases easily, water behaves consistently across clean panels and the surface feels slick rather than grabby, the coating is doing its job.
If beading has changed, decontaminate first before assuming failure. Most of the time the coating is intact and the surface is simply contaminated.
The Short Version
- 1Respect the curing window after application
- 2Pre-rinse and foam before you touch the paint
- 3Two buckets, pH neutral shampoo, top to bottom
- 4Dry promptly, never air dry
- 5Never use a brush car wash
- 6Remove droppings and sap quickly
- 7Decontaminate and top up periodically
- 8Ask before adding any other product on top
