Why Cheap Car Detailing Can Cost You More

18 August 2026 · 6 Min Read · By Shabz

Machine polishing a bonnet under correction lighting during paint correction

What Gets Cut First

The Pre-Rinse And Foam

Going straight to a contact wash saves fifteen minutes and is the single most common cause of new swirl marks. Grit that should have been rinsed off gets dragged across the paint instead.

Decontamination

Iron removal, tar removal and clay treatment take real time. They are invisible in photos, so they are the easiest stage to drop without the customer noticing on the day.

The Panel Wipe Before Coating

If a coating is involved, skipping the panel wipe means the coating bonds to polishing oils rather than clear coat. It looks perfect on handover and fails in patches months later.

The Final Inspection

The walk around under lights is where missed spots get caught. It is also the first thing to go when the next booking is already waiting.

The Damage You Might Not Notice Immediately

  • Fresh swirl marks, only visible in direct sunlight a week later
  • Holograms from a rotary polisher used carelessly
  • Dressing sling from over applied tyre shine down the side of the car
  • Silicone dressing on interior glass, which smears every time it rains
  • Trim stained by aggressive wheel cleaner overspray
  • Water trapped in seats from over wetting during extraction
  • Burn through on a panel edge from too aggressive a cutting pass

What The Fix Costs

Swirls introduced during a cheap wash need machine correction to remove, which is more expensive than the original detail was.

A coating applied over unprepared paint is worse. The coating has to be removed, the paint corrected, and a new coating applied. You pay for the whole job twice, and the swirls were sealed under a hard layer in the meantime.

Burn through is the genuinely serious one. If a cutting pass goes through the clear coat on an edge, the only fix is a respray of that panel.

How To Tell A Quote Is Too Thin

  1. 1The job is quoted at two or three hours for a full detail
  2. 2Decontamination is not mentioned anywhere
  3. 3Nobody asks about the paint condition or wants to see the car
  4. 4Multiple cars are being done in the same day by one person
  5. 5Protection is described vaguely as a polish or a shine
  6. 6There is no mention of where the car will be worked on

What A Fair Price Actually Buys

Time. The Popz Full Detail Special is a full day of work on one car, quoted on the vehicle. Shabz is on site in the morning and finished by night, with nothing cut short to fit another booking in.

Eight years hands on, one car per day, and a final inspection under lights before the keys come back. That constraint on volume is the guarantee of consistency.

Ask The Right Questions Instead Of Comparing Numbers

How many cars do you do a day. What preparation is included. Where will my car be while you work on it. Who is physically doing the job.

The answers tell you far more than the price does.
